The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) has launched its sixth cycle, inviting researchers from around the world to submit innovative proposals addressing global water security challenges. Up to three winning projects will receive grants of up to $1.5 million (AED 5.511 million) each, spread over three years.

The announcement was made during the opening of the seventh International Rain Enhancement Forum (IREF), held in Abu Dhabi. The forum brings together global experts to discuss the latest advancements in rain enhancement and water security.

This year’s cycle focuses on five key research areas: optimised cloud seeding materials, novel rain enhancement systems, autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS), limited-area climate interventions, and advanced modelling, software, and data.

Speaking at the forum, His Excellency Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), emphasised the significance of the initiative. “UAEREP’s sixth cycle presents a vital opportunity for the global scientific community to contribute to the development of innovative solutions that address growing water security challenges. This aligns with the UAE’s ongoing commitment to accelerating climate action and building resilience against the impacts of climate change,” he said.

Alya Al Mazrouei, Director of UAEREP, added that the program aims to position the UAE as a leader in rain enhancement research. “Through this cycle, we aim to build on the impactful achievements of previous cycles, empowering initiatives worldwide to optimise strategies, refine operations, and achieve improved precipitation outcomes.”

Researchers have until 13 March 2025 to register their proposals, with initial pre-proposals due by 20 March 2025. Applicants invited to submit full proposals will be notified by 20 May, with final submissions required by 28 August 2025. The winners will be announced in January 2026 following a two-stage merit review process.

Projects will be assessed on their alignment with UAEREP’s priorities, research quality, multidisciplinary collaboration, and potential to advance the rain enhancement industry. Successful proposals are expected to make meaningful contributions to global water security challenges.

Since its inception, UAEREP has invested AED 82.6 million in 11 research projects, resulting in eight patents, with three more pending. Three additional projects are currently underway, further cementing the UAE’s commitment to innovation in this critical field.

The program is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to address climate change and enhance water security both locally and globally.
