West Midlands Tops List of Best Counties for UK Start-ups

New research has identified the best counties in the UK to start a business, with the West Midlands emerging as the top region for entrepreneurs.

The analysis, carried out by ultrafast broadband provider Trooli, ranked counties based on a range of factors critical to business success. These include business growth rates, broadband speeds, and proximity to London. According to the findings, the West Midlands topped the list, thanks to its thriving business environment and strong infrastructure.

In the past year, the West Midlands saw the creation of 13,785 new businesses, more than any other region in the UK. This was coupled with a significant proportion of ‘high-growth’ companies, which are businesses expanding at a rapid pace. With its central location and large talent pool, the region is proving to be an ideal base for start-ups looking to tap into an active and growing economy.

The county also boasts some of the best broadband speeds in the UK, with an average of 93.4Mbps. This, along with its relatively short distance from London – just 115 miles – and excellent transport links, makes the West Midlands an attractive option for new businesses looking for strong connectivity without the high costs associated with the capital.

Hertfordshire ranked second on the list, benefiting from proximity to London (48 miles away) and a significant number of high-growth businesses. With over 230 fast-growing companies based in the area, Hertfordshire is home to one of the highest concentrations of high-growth businesses in the UK.

Third place went to Berkshire, which is also within easy reach of London (just 48 miles) and offers businesses high broadband speeds of 88.5Mbps. The county’s extensive availability of ultrafast broadband makes it an excellent location for start-ups looking for top-tier connectivity, without paying the hefty price tag associated with being based in the capital.

Other counties that made the top 10 include Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Greater Manchester, Surrey, Essex, Hampshire, Bedfordshire, and Kent. These areas were chosen for their thriving economies, excellent infrastructure, and high levels of business activity, making them ideal for businesses looking to establish themselves outside of London.
