A new documentary tracing the rise of Vietnam as Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital economy has premiered on the Discovery Channel. Titled Silicon Delta – The Story of Vietnam’s Tech Revolution, the half-hour programme offers a detailed look at the country’s technological transformation, focusing on the pioneering role played by FPT, Vietnam’s leading tech corporation. Available in 10 languages, including English, Japanese, German, and Chinese, the documentary is part of Discovery’s effort to spotlight global technology success stories.

The documentary takes viewers through Vietnam’s journey from an emerging economy to its current status as a regional tech powerhouse, exploring the country’s potential to become a key player in the global digital workforce. FPT’s evolution from a small local enterprise to a multibillion-dollar corporation mirrors the broader growth of Vietnam’s tech sector and serves as the focal point of the film.

FPT, ranked among Asia’s top 50 IT services companies, is depicted as a symbol of resilience and innovation in Vietnam’s tech revolution. The film highlights the corporation’s key milestones, from its founding during the early days of economic reform to its international expansion and continual innovation across fields such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and automotive technology.

The early sections of the documentary explore the entrepreneurial spirit that shaped Vietnam’s post-reform economy. It details FPT’s breakthrough deal and its ambitious decision to expand globally, navigating challenges that arose during the dot-com boom of the 1990s. A key moment in the company’s history was its successful foray into Japan, which laid the groundwork for FPT’s expansion into education and the creation of a tech-focused workforce.

The film also highlights FPT’s resilience in the face of industry challenges. From advances in AI and automotive technology to its recent focus on semiconductors, FPT has continually adapted to remain at the forefront of innovation. The company’s story is intertwined with Vietnam’s broader ambitions to lead in cutting-edge sectors and become a global hub for technology.

Speaking about the documentary, Dr. Truong Gia Binh, Founder and Chairman of FPT, reflected on the company’s origins. “FPT was founded as a means for survival, driven by the ambition to lift a nation from poverty and showcase Vietnam’s intelligence to the world. To this day, we remain committed to that legacy, building a highly skilled workforce to lead both Vietnam and global transformation in AI, semiconductors, and automotive technology,” he said.

FPT Software Chairwoman Chu Thi Thanh Ha highlighted the daring spirit that has propelled the company’s growth over the past 25 years. “This documentary captures the collective commitment of many generations at FPT who dared to dream big and act boldly. Our decision to ‘Go global or die’ was a pivotal moment for the company and a game-changer for Vietnam. That boldness is embedded in FPT’s DNA and will continue to drive us as we explore new frontiers in technology.”

The documentary is now available on the Discovery Channel in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Germany, offering viewers a unique insight into Vietnam’s tech transformation and the rise of one of its most iconic companies, FPT. Viewers can also access the full documentary online here.
