Businesses in Mid Wales are flourishing thanks to the support of Antur Cymru, a local organisation dedicated to helping start-ups and entrepreneurs. Several companies, including Beyond Breakout escape rooms, Keridwen Garden Design, and Seren Handmade, have successfully accessed transformative funding through the Powys Growth Grant, showcasing the positive impact on the regional economy.
Beyond Breakout, launched near Llanidloes by friends Lorna Morris and Jo Woodall, began just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Despite the challenges posed by the last five years, their mobile escape rooms business has thrived, catering to schools and various customer events such as team-building exercises and stag and hen parties.
“The support from Antur Cymru has been immense,” said Lorna. “The grant we received enabled us to develop a new growth-focused plan, and the advice we’ve received on various issues, especially SEO, has been invaluable.” The business pivoted to outdoor escape rooms in response to the pandemic, successfully engaging Year 6 students preparing to transition to high school. “We’re constantly developing new ideas, and it’s an exciting time for us,” added Jo.
In Crickhowell, Kathleen Robinson has turned her passion for sustainable horticulture into a thriving business with Keridwen Garden Design. Drawing on over 20 years of experience, Kathleen sought support from Antur Cymru to create a business plan, leading to a grant that facilitated the purchase of essential equipment, including a polytunnel and design software.
“I took the leap into entrepreneurship after years of promoting the health benefits of being outdoors,” said Kathleen. “I already have a waiting list despite only opening earlier this year. The partnership with my clients is key, as we embark on this journey together, enhancing their outdoor spaces while building their confidence.”
Meanwhile, in Newtown, Lauren Garbutt, owner of Seren Handmade, has experienced significant growth in 2024. Her bespoke personalised clothing and embroidery business has expanded to the Antur Cymru Trading Space at Bear Lanes Shopping Centre after receiving support from business advisor Emma Jehu.
“I’ve received ongoing help with everything from grants to marketing strategies,” Lauren shared. “Networking and advice on SEO and ecommerce platforms have been particularly beneficial. I envision my business continuing to grow, eventually allowing me to expand my workspace and hire staff to assist with events and shows.”
Emma Jehu, a business advisor at Antur Cymru, praised the dedication of these entrepreneurs. “We’re delighted to see the success of these businesses; it’s why we do what we do,” she said. “Helping individuals turn ideas into reality has a significant ripple effect on the Mid Wales economy.”
Antur Cymru remains committed to supporting local entrepreneurs, encouraging more small business owners to reach out for guidance. “We’re here to assist anyone in the region looking to take their business to the next level. Don’t hesitate to contact us for support,” Emma added.
