Small businesses in West Wales are flourishing thanks to the efforts of enterprise agency Antur Cymru, which has played a pivotal role in fostering growth and prosperity in the region. Local traders have successfully accessed grants from the Cynnal y Cardi Fund, administered by Ceredigion County Council through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

Among the beneficiaries are Brodwaith Tysul Embroidery and Cariad Glass, both of which have experienced significant post-pandemic growth with assistance from the Cymorth Busnes Lleol (Local Business Support) and SMART Busnes project teams.

Justine Dodd, co-founder of Cariad Glass, a stained-glass painting business based in Llandysul, shared her appreciation for Antur Cymru’s guidance. Founded by Justine and her husband Chris, the company produces artisan gifts and offers creative classes. Justine, who has been shortlisted in the Photography, Art and Design category for this year’s Llais Cymru Welsh Women in Business Awards, reflected on how the agency helped them turn their aspirations into reality.

“We contacted Antur Cymru out of interest more than necessity, but we’re so glad we did,” she said. “They supported us in many ways, from seeking grant assistance to evaluating our marketing strategy and website. They even set us up with footfall and air quality monitors.”

The support has instilled confidence in their pricing strategy and product offerings. Cariad Glass now not only focuses on traditional stained-glass work and commissions but also provides tuition to small groups from across the UK and even international students. The business has expanded into a new premises that showcases the work of over 20 local artists alongside its working studio.

Brodwaith Tysul, owned by Abby Reid, has also thrived with the help of the Cynnal y Cardi Fund. Abby aimed to rejuvenate the High Street in Llandysul while expanding her embroidery business. Initially content in her job at a school kitchen, she turned to Antur Cymru for support in realising her entrepreneurial dream.

“Antur Cymru was very encouraging about my idea to rejuvenate the High Street,” Abby explained. “I started attending weekly sessions that were incredibly helpful, teaching me about business costing and how to shape my services around my life and needs.”

The guidance provided has significantly bolstered her confidence in her brand, and with the addition of other businesses in the area, Llandysul now boasts a vibrant “creative corner.” Abby likened Antur Cymru to a coach, describing their role as one of encouragement, caution, and celebration through her journey.

The Cynnal y Cardi Fund is dedicated to engaging local people and businesses in sustainable solutions to the economic, social, and environmental challenges facing the Ceredigion area. Its focus includes improving community infrastructure, testing new approaches, capacity building, and enhancing digital infrastructure.

As Antur Cymru continues to empower local businesses, the positive impact on the community is clear, with entrepreneurs like Justine and Abby leading the way in transforming their dreams into thriving enterprises.
